Click to Call (205) 619-2895Moores Mill conditions and door hinge repair
River humidity off the Tennessee keeps interior air damp well into October, then the first hard freeze arrives and every seal, sweep and gasket in the house gets tested overnight.
Damp jamb material loses its grip on screw threads, and a hinge screw that was tight in a dry jamb starts to spin once the wood around it has been at high moisture content for a couple of seasons.
A gust catching an open door and slamming it against its stop puts an enormous shock load through the top hinge, and that single event is often what starts a sag that develops over the following months.
We see the pattern often enough across Madison County that we usually know what we are looking at before we arrive.
Local factors we account for in Moores Mill: sustained humidity and storm wind — typical of the Tennessee Valley.

- Measure the reveal all roundThe gap pattern around a sagging door points straight at which hinge has given up.
- Check what the screws are holding ontoShort screws into casing rather than framing are the most common cause of sag we see, and no hinge fixes that.
- Rebuild the anchorageWhere the screws no longer bite, we fill and re-drill so the fixings reach solid material, then fit long screws into framing.
- Match the hinge to the doorWeight, size, throw and finish. Heavy doors and doors with closers need bearing hinges.
- Re-hang and check the revealAn even gap top to bottom, latch side and hinge side, before we go anywhere near the lock.
- Silence it properlyOnce the geometry is right, the pins and knuckles are lubricated so the squeak does not simply come back. Through the Valley we check for seasonal swelling before removing any material, because a door planed in August is a door with a gap in January.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of door hinge repair in Moores Mill
What a door hinge repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:
- finish and security hardware selections
- the weight and size of the door
- whether the mortises or screw holes need rebuilding first
- standard hinges versus ball bearing or continuous hinges
- how many hinges need replacement versus repair
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Moores Mill.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door hinge repair in Moores Mill: questions we get asked
Why do my hinge screws keep coming loose?
Because they are only holding into jamb material, which is often less than an inch of soft wood. Long screws driven into the structural framing behind the jamb solve it permanently.
Can hinges be repaired or do they have to be replaced?
Pins, tips and lubrication problems are repairable. Once the knuckles have worn oval and the hinge has play in it, it is done and needs replacing, and putting a new pin in a worn hinge does not help.
Should I upgrade to security hinges on my exterior doors?
If the hinges are on the outside, yes. Non-removable pins or set screws stop the hinge side being an easy way in, and it is inexpensive compared with everything else you might do to secure an entry.
My door is sagging. Do I need a new door?
Almost never. A sagging door is a hinge problem, usually the top hinge losing its grip on the jamb. Once the fasteners are anchored into the framing properly the door comes back up and latches again.
Are the hinges on my sliding door serviceable?
Sliding doors do not use hinges, but French and swinging patio doors do, and they are heavy. Those hinges take a lot of load and are worth checking if the door has started dragging.
What makes hinges squeal?
Dry or worn pins, and sometimes grit in the knuckles. In Moores Mill the doors that squeal first are usually exterior doors, because moisture strips the lubricant and starts surface corrosion inside the knuckle.
