Our Madison customers are spread from Downtown Madison to Clift Farm and out around Toyota Field, and we serve the surrounding Madison County communities on the same schedule.
Between the established parts of Madison and the newer subdivisions, we see two different kinds of failure: worn-out frames on one side of town and worn-out hardware on the other.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Why door hinge repair fails in the Tennessee Valley
River humidity off the Tennessee keeps interior air damp well into October, then the first hard freeze arrives and every seal, sweep and gasket in the house gets tested overnight.
Water running down a door edge collects at the hinge leaves and sits in the mortise, which corrodes the hinge and softens the jamb wood the screws are anchored in.
Damp jamb material loses its grip on screw threads, and a hinge screw that was tight in a dry jamb starts to spin once the wood around it has been at high moisture content for a couple of seasons.
We factor that in on every door hinge repair job around Toyota Field and the rest of Madison.
Local factors we account for in Madison: heavy rainfall and sustained humidity — typical of the Tennessee Valley.

- Measure the reveal all roundThe gap pattern around a sagging door points straight at which hinge has given up.
- Check what the screws are holding ontoShort screws into casing rather than framing are the most common cause of sag we see, and no hinge fixes that.
- Repair the mortise before the hardwareChewed or split mortises get dowelled and re-cut. Fitting a new hinge to damaged timber just moves the failure a few weeks out.
- Match the hinge to the doorWeight, size, throw and finish. Heavy doors and doors with closers need bearing hinges. Through the Valley we check for seasonal swelling before removing any material, because a door planed in August is a door with a gap in January.
- Re-hang and check the revealEven gap top to bottom on the latch side, and a door that stays where you leave it.
- Confirm the latch and lock still line upMoving a door on its hinges changes where the latch lands, so the strike gets checked too.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of door hinge repair in Madison
Pricing on door hinge repair depends on what has actually failed, which is why we talk it through before quoting. These are the things that move the number:
- whether the door also needs re-hanging or the strike relocated
- standard hinges versus ball bearing or continuous hinges
- the weight and size of the door
- how many hinges need replacement versus repair
- whether the mortises or screw holes need rebuilding first
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Madison.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door hinge repair in Madison: questions we get asked
What makes hinges squeal?
Dry or worn pins, and sometimes grit in the knuckles. In Madison the doors that squeal first are usually exterior doors, because moisture strips the lubricant and starts surface corrosion inside the knuckle.
Why do my hinge screws keep coming loose?
Because they are only holding into jamb material, which is often less than an inch of soft wood. Long screws driven into the structural framing behind the jamb solve it permanently.
My door swings open by itself. Can that be fixed?
Yes. That means the hinge line is out of plumb, so the door is rolling downhill. Re-hanging it plumb fixes it, and in Madison it often turns up in houses where the frame has moved.
Are the hinges on my sliding door serviceable?
Sliding doors do not use hinges, but French and swinging patio doors do, and they are heavy. Those hinges take a lot of load and are worth checking if the door has started dragging.
Do heavy doors need special hinges?
Yes. Solid core, exterior and commercial doors, and any door with a closer on it, should be on ball bearing hinges. Plain butt hinges on a heavy door wear out fast and take the jamb with them.
Will fixing the hinges fix my latching problem?
Frequently. A door that has dropped on its hinges puts the latch below the strike. Bringing the door back to position often means the lock works again with no other work.
