Fairhope conditions and door handle repair

Blowing sand gets into everything down here. Tracks, screen channels, thresholds and lock cylinders all collect it, and it acts like sandpaper on moving parts.

Grit works into the space between the handle rose and the door face and into the latch mechanism, and once it is in there the handle feels gritty to turn and the internal spring is wearing every time it moves.

Salt attacks the plated finish on handle sets first and the springs inside them second, and a handle that has started to pit on the outside usually has a corroded return spring that is about to fail.

We factor that in on every door handle repair job around the Fairhope Municipal Pier and the rest of Fairhope.

Local factors we account for in Fairhope: blowing sand and salt air — typical of the Alabama Gulf Coast.

Our door handle repair process

  1. Work out whether it is the handle or the latchThey feel similar from the outside. Turning the handle with the door open tells us immediately which part has failed.
  2. Check the door and strike alignmentA latch dragging on the strike puts load through the handle mechanism and is a common reason handles fail early.
  3. Repair where it is worth repairingGood hardware often just needs a spring cassette or a spindle, and that is a better outcome than replacing a solid brass set with a builder-grade one.
  4. Fit square to the doorBackset, thickness and bore all get checked. A set fitted to an oversized bore will work loose again within weeks. On the coast we also check every fastener on the opening, because salt finds plated screws long before it touches the door itself.
  5. Adjust the latch engagementThe door should close and latch with a light push, not a shove.
  6. Check the rest of the setHandles usually fail in groups, so we test the others while we are there rather than leaving you to call again.

What affects the cost of door handle repair in Fairhope

Every door handle repair call in Baldwin County is a little different, and the cost follows what the door actually needs:

  • commercial grade requirements on high-use doors
  • keyed versus non-keyed function
  • the grade and finish of the hardware chosen
  • repair of the existing set versus full replacement
  • whether the bore or backset needs correction

Door handle repair in Fairhope: questions we get asked

Do I need to replace the lock to replace the handle?

Not necessarily. On a keyed entry set they are integrated, but on many doors the handle and the deadbolt are separate and you can change one without touching the other.

Can you fix an old mortise handle set on a historic door?

Often yes. Old mortise sets were built to be serviced, and the original hardware is usually better made than any replacement. We would rather rebuild it than gut a door for a modern set.

Why does my door rattle after a new handle was fitted?

The new latch is probably sitting at a slightly different depth than the old one, so the strike no longer holds the door tight. Adjusting the strike fixes it in a few minutes.

Do you do commercial handle and lever work?

Yes, including Grade 1 lever sets, classroom and storeroom functions and hardware on doors with closers, where the handle has to work against constant spring pressure.

Can you match new handles to my existing hardware?

In most cases. Finish families are reasonably consistent between brands, and for Fairhope homes where the hinges and locks are staying, matching the handle finish is usually straightforward.

Why does my exterior handle keep corroding?

Exposure. In Baldwin County an exterior handle needs a finish rated for it, and cheap plated hardware on a door that gets weather will pit within a couple of years no matter how well it is installed.

Most doors we see are repairable.Call and find out before you price a replacement.
